Leaves of the tree Ilex Guayusa are used for the preparation. It is an evergreen tree that can grow up to 30 m. Ilex Guayusa belongs to holly, so the drink can be reminiscent of the much-sung yerba mate. This plant has oval leaves and tiny white flowers that later turn into bold red fruits.
Outside of Ecuador, it is also at home in some areas of Peru or Colombia. It is intentionally grown in jungle gardens and thanks to that it is possible to introduce it in an organic quality. You don't need any artificial means of cultivation that could significantly affect its quality. Each harvest of the leaves is done by hand, about once every four years. The harvested leaves are left directly in the sun to dry. The result of this process is premium organic quality leaves that are the best you can give the body. Its healing properties have been known for more than 1500 years.
